When we talk about aging unapologetically, we are not talking about fighting time. We are talking about taking care of the skin we are in. And the absolute best way to care for skin over 40 is to protect it from the sun. UV rays are responsible for the vast majority of visible skin aging—from fine lines and loss of elasticity to hyperpigmentation and dullness.

But finding the right SPF can be a journey. You want protection, but you don't want a white cast, a greasy finish, or breakouts. Over the years, I have tested countless formulas, and I have finally narrowed it down to my absolute favourites.

The Dos and Don'ts of SPF Over 40

DO wear it every day. Even if it is cloudy. Even if you are just sitting by a window. UV rays penetrate glass and clouds.

DON'T rely on the SPF in your makeup. You would need to apply a mask-like layer of foundation to get the actual protection listed on the bottle. Always use a dedicated SPF underneath.

DO reapply. If you are out in the sun, one morning application is not enough.

DON'T forget your neck and hands. These areas show sun damage just as quickly as our faces, but we almost always forget to protect them.

DO switch to SPF 50 in the summer. The products below are mostly SPF 30, which is perfect for daily, incidental exposure. But when the real summer hits and I am spending hours outside, I always upgrade to SPF 50. Now, onto the products I actually use and love.
